Youth Thematic Lounge

The Youth Thematic Lounge is a welcoming and dynamic space at UArctic Congress 2026 where participants can connect, learn, and engage in discussions on topics shaping the Arctic and the world today.
Throughout the Congress, the Lounge will host interactive sessions, cultural activities, and conversations on themes such as Arctic leadership, climate change, Indigenous knowledge, youth engagement, and international opportunities. The Lounge also offers a relaxed social space for participants to recharge, meet new people, and take a break between sessions.
The Youth Thematic Lounge is located on the first floor of the Congress Venue through the first door on the right when entering the main entrance hall, and will be open throughout the Congress days from 26–28 May.
In addition to the scheduled sessions, the Lounge offers a relaxed social space where participants can recharge between sessions, meet new people, play board games, use the phone charging station, and visit the selfie booth.

Tuesday, 26 May
11:00 – 11:45 | Shaping the Arctic: Stories, Engineering & Educational Leadership
Join two leading UArctic Chairs, Dr. Kirk Anderson and Dr. Bing Chen, for a dynamic fireside chaton leadership, research, and the future of the Arctic. This session dives into the ideas, experiences,and innovations shaping Arctic communities today. From advancing Indigenous education to tackling environmental challenges, the speakers will share powerful insights from their work across disciplines and borders. Expect candid reflections on their career journeys, bold perspectives on emerging opportunities, and practical advice for students eager to make an impact. Fast-paced and thought-provoking, this conversation connects big ideas with real-world action—offering a compelling look at how the Arctic is being shaped today, and who will lead it tomorrow.
15:00 – 16:00 | Duodji (Traditional Sámi Handicraft) & Chat
This interactive session offers participants an opportunity to engage with and learn more about the Permanent Participant Youth Network and the respective Permanent Participant Organizations of the Arctic Council. Youth representatives will introduce initiatives, projects, and programmes, and invite participants to learn through hands-on traditional handicraft activities, including bracelet braiding. The handicrafts are beginner-friendly, with all materials provided. Participants will explore the Sámi handicraft technique šnjirrehit, meaning braiding, a traditional duodji practice connecting culture and creativity.

Wednesday, 27 May
10:15 – 10:45 | Ideas to Action: Designing the Arctic Youth Conference 2027
Join the Chairship Youth Committee for an open, interactive sharing circle. This informal session invites Arctic youth and partner organizations to help shape the Arctic Youth Conference 2027 by sharing perspectives, expectations, and recommendations. Participants will explore meaningful youth engagement, priority themes, and ways to create inclusive and culturally respectful spaces. Reflective questions will guide discussion and generate ideas to inform the Conference’s design, programming, and collaboration.
14:00 – 15:00 | Art Making, Advocacy & Climate Collective
Join the Climate Collective to discuss and connect on the impacts of climate change on mental health. Climate change is affecting young people through stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. This session supports well-being while encouraging meaningful action. Participants will contribute to a collaborative collage displayed throughout the congress, open for continued additions.

Thursday, 28 May
10:00 | Crafts & Culture as Living Knowledge—Land, Language, Identity, and Youth Leadership
Join an engaging fireside conversation featuring Heather Angnatok and Dr. Sylvia Moore. They will share stories and insights on how cultural practices—such as sewing, land-based learning, and community gatherings—serve as forms of knowledge, identity, and leadership in the North. Participants will reflect on learning beyond the classroom, explore connections between culture and community, engage in discussion, and take part in a short reflective activity.

Curious about studying in the North and beyond? This session introduces the University of the Arctic’s north2north mobility program. Participants will learn about exchange opportunities, application processes, and available grant options. The session offers practical guidance and concludes with an open Q&A; to support next steps
