In connection with UArctic Congress 2026 and the Ocean Connectivity Conference, a curated selection of guided excursions and outdoor experiences has been developed exclusively for Congress participants. These experiences offer a unique opportunity to explore the Faroe Islands beyond Tórshavn and will be available from 23 to 30 May 2026.
The excursions offer unique opportunities to experience the Faroe Islands beyond the conference venue, including scenic bus tours, boat trips along dramatic sea cliffs, guided hikes through historic landscapes, and cycling tours with local guides. The excursions vary in duration and activity level and are designed to highlight both the natural environment and cultural heritage of the islands.

Highlights of the Faroe Islands – 8-hour tour (09:00 departure from Tórshavn)

This full-day tour takes you to some of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic locations. We begin in Kirkjubøur, the country’s most important historical site, home to the ruins of Magnus Cathedral (c. 1300), Saint Olav’s Church (12th century), and the historic farmhouse Kirkjubøargarður, inhabited by the same family for 17 generations.
The tour continues to the picturesque village of Saksun, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and waterfalls, and onwards to Tjørnuvík, known for its Viking heritage, sandy beach, and views of the famous “Giant and Hag” sea stacks.
We then cross the island to the charming village of Gjógv, with time to explore its natural harbour and scenic surroundings. During summer (May–August), puffins may be spotted nesting above the gorge.
Return to Tórshavn in the afternoon via a scenic mountain route, with several photo stops along the way.

High-Speed Boat Tour to Hestur & Klæmintsgjógv - 1.5 hours (Departures at 12:00, 14:40, and 16:30 from Gamlarætt)

Experience the dramatic western coastline of Hestur Island on this thrilling boat tour. The highlight is a visit to Klæmintsgjógv, recognised as the world’s largest sea cave, surrounded by towering cliffs, striking rock formations, and seabird colonies.
This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most remote and spectacular coastal landscapes in the Faroe Islands from the sea.

Viking History, Sea Cliffs & Scenic Hike – 9-hour tour (09:00 departure from Tórshavn)
Your day begins with pickup at your hotel and a visit to the village of Kvívík, where you will explore ancient Viking settlements and learn about the Faroe Islands’ early history.
The tour continues to Vestmanna for the renowned boat trip along the dramatic sea cliffs, featuring striking basalt formations, narrow sea caves, and rich birdlife. Lunch is served in Vestmanna with views over the fjord.
The day concludes with a scenic hike from Skeiðskarð to Norðadalur, offering panoramic views of valleys, cliffs, and the surrounding ocean – an ideal way to experience the Faroes’ rugged landscape on foot.

Vágar & Trælanípan (Slave Cliff) Hike – 7-hour tour (09:00 departure from Tórshavn)

This tour takes you to the island of Vágar. The first stop is the picturesque village of Bøur, offering stunning views of the islet Tindhólmur and the iconic sea stacks Drangarnir.
We then continue to Gásadalur, home to the breathtaking Múlafossur waterfall – one of the most photographed sights in the Faroe Islands. Until 2006, the village was accessible only by hiking over the mountains, adding to its remote charm.
The tour concludes with a hike to Trælanípan (Slave Cliff), starting near the famous “floating lake” Sørvágsvatn. From the cliffs, you will enjoy spectacular views of Bøsdalafossur waterfall and the Atlantic Ocean below. The hike takes approximately 3 hours in total.

Footsteps of the Vikings – 4-hour hike (16:00 departure from Tórshavn)

This scenic mountain hike on Streymoy follows old cairn-marked paths from Skeiðsskarð to the peaceful valley of Norðradalur, offering panoramic views of Vágar, Koltur, and Hestur along the way. The route passes dramatic cliffs, open highland plateaus, and quiet valleys – a true experience of Faroese wilderness.
Walking these historic paths, used for centuries by local communities, you will encounter landscapes shaped by both nature and history. Local legends and stories from the Viking Age (9th–11th centuries) add cultural depth to this striking setting.
Combining sweeping views, rugged terrain, and historical atmosphere, this hike offers a memorable introduction to the natural and cultural heritage of the Faroe Islands.

Mountain Biking with Local Guide – 2-hour tour (14:00 departure from Tórshavn)
This guided mountain biking tour takes you from the city centre of Tórshavn to a scenic valley just outside town. The route passes the beach and continues along gravel paths and hilly terrain, including sections where you cycle alongside and across a small stream.
From the valley, the tour follows an old horse path with panoramic views over Tórshavn before returning via narrow trails through the western part of the city.

Biking to Norðadalsskarð Viewpoint with Local Guide – 3-hour tour (10:15 departure from Tórshavn)
Challenge yourself with a scenic climb to the stunning viewpoint at Norðadalsskarð (225 m above sea level). The tour begins along the coastal road, passing cultural landmarks before gradually ascending the mountain road with sweeping views of the northern islands.
From the mountain pass, you will enjoy spectacular views of the island of Koltur and the village of Norðadal. The return ride takes you downhill towards Tórshavn, offering panoramic views over the southern part of the island.

Bike Tour to Historic Kirkjubøur with Local Guide – 3-hour tour (10:15 departure from Tórshavn)
Cycle from Tórshavn to the historic village of Kirkjubøur, home to some of the Faroe Islands’ most significant cultural landmarks. This sustainable and active tour combines scenic riding with rich history.
The route passes through the eastern district of Tórshavn and across a mountain pass (190 m above sea level), offering panoramic views of the western and southern islands. In Kirkjubøur, you will visit Saint Olav’s Church, the ruins of the medieval Magnus Cathedral, and Kirkjubøargarður – one of the oldest continuously inhabited wooden houses in Europe.
The return ride takes you through the hillside village of Velbastaður before descending back to central Tórshavn.
