Katrín Jakobsdóttir

Chair of the Arctic Circle Polar Dialogue, Senior Emissary of Arctic Circle, Prime Minister of Iceland 2017-2024

Katrín Jakobsdóttir served as Prime Minister of Iceland from 2017 to 2024 and led the Left-Green Movement as Chair from 2013 to 2024. Her earlier government roles include Minister for Education, Science and Culture, and Minister of Nordic Co-operation from 2009 to 2013.

A long-time member of the Althing (Icelandic Parliament), from 2007 to 2014, she has also contributed to local politics, education, and media. In recent years, she has taken on academic and leadership roles, including serving as a university lecturer and a board member at the University of Iceland.

Since 2023, she has served as the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Champion for the European Well-being Economy Initiative.

With an educational background in Icelandic literature and languages, she has published numerous academic articles on crime fiction and popular culture and co-authored two best-selling crime novels, Reykjavík and The French Hospital (Franski Spítalinn).

Katrín was born on February 1, 1976 and speaks English, Danish, and French. She is married to Gunnar Sigvaldason and together they have three sons.
