Hjálmar Hátún

Senior Researcher at Faroe Marine Research Institute (FAMRI)

Hjálmar Hátún is a Senior Researcher at the Faroe Marine Research Institute (FAMRI), with a background in physics (MSc) and physical oceanography (PhD). His research focuses on how the North Atlantic subpolar gyre influences large-scale ocean circulation, particularly the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), as well as marine climate and ecosystems in the northeastern Atlantic.

He has held positions at institutions including NTNU, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Bergen, the University of Washington, and the Nansen Center, and has been affiliated with FAMRI since 2006.

Hjálmar Hátún will serve as a keynote speaker in the thematic plenary session "Oceans" taking place on 28 May at 12:55.

In his lecture, Arctic-Atlantic Connectivity, he will explore water exchanges across the Greenland-Scotland Ridge and revisit discussions on a potential AMOC slowdown. The talk will highlight natural variability in ocean processes and their impact on marine ecosystems, including plankton, fish stocks, seabirds, and marine mammals, as well as conditions on the Faroe and Iceland shelves.
