Keynote speakers include Bárður á Steig Nielsen, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries, and Christine Creyke from Gwich’in Council International, Permanent Participant of the Arctic Council. Together, they will bring political and Indigenous perspectives on the role of oceans in the Arctic and the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
The session will conclude with a panel discussion on the triple planetary crisis in the Arctic marine environment, addressing biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. The panel will feature Snorri Sigurdsson, CAFF Chair; Fredrik Juell Theisen, PAME Head of Delegation and Vice-Chair (Norway); and Gunn-Britt Retter, Head of Delegation to the Arctic Council for the Saami Council. The discussion will be moderated by Inge Thaulow, Head of Delegation to CAFF, Kingdom of Denmark.
Together, the speakers and panellists will frame key issues and set the direction for Ocean Day, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action across science, policy, and Indigenous knowledge systems.
